Everywhere USA, February 2013 — Even for those of us without allergies, poor indoor air quality is an often overlooked health issue. Recent research has shown that the air inside some buildings can be more polluted than the outdoor air in the most industrialized of cities.
And since many of us spend some 90 percent of our time indoors, cleaning the air where we live and work might be one of the most important things we can do for our health.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists three basic strategies for improving indoor air: source control, improved ventilation and air cleaners.

Everywhere USA, February 2013 — Difficult as it is to believe, that special canine or feline person who means so much to you may be exposed to more things that are hazardous to their health than we are.
Researchers at the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that pet dogs and cats were contaminated with 48 of 70 industrial chemicals tested, including 43 chemicals at levels higher than those typically found in people.
“Just as children ingest pollutants in tap water, play on lawns with pesticide residues or breathe in an array of indoor air contaminants, so do their pets,” reports EWG. “Since they develop and age seven or more times faster than children, pets also develop health problems from exposures much faster,” EWG adds.
It has been found that average levels of chemicals such as stain- and grease-proof coatings (perfluorochemicals) were 2.4 times higher in dogs. In addition, fire retardants (PBDEs) were 23 times higher in cats, when compared to average levels in human beings.

Chicago, Illinois, January 2013— In 1885, Claire Cretors’ great grandfather invented a machine that forever changed snacking: The commercial popcorn machine.
126 years later, his great-granddaughter is writing the next chapter for the Cretors family. This time, with the popcorn itself.
Made with all-natural ingredients completely free of GMO’s, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, G.H. Cretors’ new signature Chicago Mix combines caramel corn and cheese corn in the same bag, offering addictive, simultaneous hits of sweet, salty, crunchy and cheesy. The caramel corn is made the old-fashioned way: by hand, in copper kettles. Cane sugar, brown rice syrup (a non-GMO alternative to corn syrup with a lower glycemic impact) and real butter is heated over aflame and then stirred slowly by hand to develop its rich complex flavor and crunch.

Atlanta, Georgia, January 2013 — The Coca-Cola Company is reinforcing its efforts to work together with American communities, business and government leaders to find meaningful solutions to the complex challenge of obesity.
A two-minute video, titled “Coming Together,” debuted recently on national cable news. The video encourages everyone to be mindful that all calories count in managing your weight, including those in Coca-Cola products and in all foods and beverages. Its purpose is to highlight some of the specifics behind the Company’s ongoing commitment to deliver more beverage choices, including low- and no-calorie options, and to clearly communicate the calorie content of all its products.
A second spot, called “Be OK,” debuted this week on American Idol. “Be OK” makes it clear right up front that a can of Coca-Cola has 140 calories. This spot also encourages people to find ways to have some fun in burning off those calories.

Everywhere USA, January 2013— Both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the Living Building Challenge (LBC) were created with the same goal in mind: to encourage more sustainability and resource conservation in architecture, design, construction and building operations. LEED, a program of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is well known in architecture, building and design circles as the standard for certifying the green attributes of new and retrofitted structures (and even entire neighborhoods).
Developers can reference LEED’s 110-point rating system to inform choices regarding design, technology, siting, landscaping and other elements of building or renovation processes. Structures using the greenest versions of each element would qualify for the highest LEED rating, Platinum (followed by Gold, Silver, and just plain Certified).

Everywhere USA, January 2013 — In between the two end of year holidays, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that flu activity was spiking in the United States, with some still having to gather, and later travel in large groups.
While the dreaded stomach flu began hitting homes this winter, a new “feel better drink” called B.R.A.T.® is making getting through vomiting and diarrhea a lot easier. The B.R.A.T. drinks are doctor recommended and based on the historically used Bananas, Rice, Applesauce & Toast (B.R.A.T.) diet, recommended dietary additions to someone suffering from stomach or gastro-intestinal distress.
The B.R.A.T. Feel Better Drinks are a new spin on this well-known B.R.A.T. Diet®, which combines an organic brown rice base, bananas & apples into a delicious and soothing new drink packed with electrolytes, zinc, calcium, vitamins and nutrients.
